Updating Family Photos at the Red Rocks and Water

This Hurricane, Utah family session at Sand Hollow was extra special. As a Southern Utah family photographer, some of my favorite sessions happen right here among the red rocks and calm water of Sand Hollow Reservoir. This sweet family hadn’t updated their portraits in a long time, so documenting this season of life felt so meaningful. The red rocks, calm water, and soft overcast sky gave us the perfect backdrop.

Outfits That Complemented the Landscape

Mom looked stunning in a light yellow dress, while Dad wore a navy blue shirt and jeans. Their two toddler boys wore shades of light blue that tied everything together beautifully. The soft, neutral palette popped against the red rocks and blended perfectly with the natural tones of Sand Hollow.

Making the Most of Weather and Light

We had a light breeze that added gorgeous movement to mom’s dress and hair. Overcast skies gave us soft, even lighting, which is always a dream for family photos. The one-year-old especially loved playing in the sand, which gave us candid, playful moments that are some of my favorites from the session.

A Fun, Laughter-Filled Session

The boys explored, laughed, and played while mom and dad shared a few quiet moments for couple photos. Sessions like these remind me how important it is to pause and capture the in-between years—the giggles, the curiosity, and the connection that make a family so unique.

Sand Hollow is one of my favorite locations for Southern Utah family photography. The red rocks, the water, and that open sky make for such a stunning backdrop no matter the season.
