One of the reasons I recommend Sand Hollow State Park so often is because every part of the park offers something different.

For this session, we started in the sandy beach area surrounded by beautiful trees. The soft sand gave the kids plenty of room to run, explore, and play while creating a warm, natural backdrop for their family portraits.

As the evening went on and the sun began to sink lower in the sky, we made our way toward the shoreline. The golden light reflecting off the water and surrounding mountains created the most beautiful finishing touch to the session.

Creating Real Smiles Instead of Perfect Poses

One thing I always tell families is that children don’t need to stand perfectly still to create beautiful photographs.

In fact, some of the best moments happen when they forget they’re having their picture taken.

Throughout this session, we played games, laughed together, and turned family photos into an adventure instead of a chore. The kids raced to pick up a stick that I placed just in front of my camera, and every round brought huge smiles, lots of laughter, and genuine excitement.

Those playful moments naturally created the authentic expressions every parent hopes for in their family photos.

My goal during every session is to guide families through activities that encourage connection rather than focusing on stiff poses. The result is a gallery full of real moments that feel like your family.

A Family Tradition Worth Remembering

Every family has traditions, and this one had my favorite.

Each year when they have family photos taken, they make sure to capture one picture where all of the kids pull their funniest faces.

Of course, we couldn’t skip that tradition.

After taking plenty of smiling portraits, everyone let loose and made the silliest expressions they could. Those images ended up being just as memorable as the perfectly posed ones because they captured each child’s personality exactly as they are right now.

I love when families include traditions like this during their sessions because those little moments often become the photographs everyone laughs about for years to come.

Ending the Evening by the Water

As sunset approached, we walked down to the water’s edge to finish the session.

The lighting had softened beautifully, creating a warm glow across the sand and reflecting off the lake. The family spent time exploring together, walking along the shoreline, and simply enjoying the evening.

Some of my favorite photographs came during these final moments because everyone was completely relaxed. The kids were having fun, Mom and Dad were soaking in the moment, and the whole session felt effortless.

That’s one of the reasons I love photographing families at Sand Hollow State Park. The scenery is incredible, but it’s also a place where families naturally slow down and enjoy spending time together.
