This sweet family of three had recently moved to Southern Utah and knew they wanted their family pictures to capture the beautiful landscape that makes this area so unique. Since they hadn’t taken professional family photos since welcoming their little boy, this session was the perfect opportunity to document this exciting new season of life.

One of the biggest reasons families love Pioneer Park is that it offers beautiful red rock scenery without requiring a long hike. The unique rock formations create a classic Southern Utah backdrop while remaining easy to access, even with young children.

Because of its popularity, though, I always recommend scheduling your session on a weekday if possible. Weekends can become quite busy, especially during spring and fall when the weather is perfect. Capturing a New Chapter for This Sweet Family

One of my favorite parts of being a family photographer is documenting life’s milestones, both big and small.

For this family, the biggest milestone was simply being together.

Their son had grown so much since he was born, and Mom realized they didn’t have many professional photos of all three of them together. As parents, it’s so common to spend years taking pictures of your children while forgetting to step in front of the camera yourselves.

These family photos gave them the chance to slow down, soak in this stage of life, and preserve memories they’ll love looking back on for years to come.

Letting Toddlers Explore Makes the Best Photos

Like most toddlers, this little guy had his own ideas for the session.

He was fascinated by the little rocks scattered throughout Pioneer Park and spent much of the evening picking them up, examining them, and exploring everything around him. Instead of trying to stop those curious moments, we simply embraced them.

Some of my favorite photographs happen when children get to be themselves.

Rather than expecting toddlers to smile perfectly at the camera for an hour, I guide sessions with movement, games, and opportunities to explore. Those genuine moments almost always create the biggest smiles and the sweetest family interactions.

Watching him proudly show his parents each new rock he discovered brought so much personality to their gallery.

Don’t Forget Photos of Just Mom and Dad

Although family photos often focus on the kids, I always encourage parents to spend a few minutes together during every session.

While their son explored nearby, we captured several sweet portraits of just Mom and Dad together. These quiet moments are often some of the most meaningful because they celebrate the relationship that started it all.

Years from now, these images will remind them not only of raising a toddler but also of the love they continue to build together through every stage of parenthood.
