As a family photographer based in St. George, Utah, I am always on the lookout for locations that feel fresh and unexpected. If you’ve been searching for a unique location for family photos near St. George, Utah, let me introduce you to one of Southern Utah’s hidden gems. Cedar Pocket, located just outside of St. George in Littlefield, Arizona, offers stunning desert scenery filled with Joshua trees, rolling mountain views, and wide-open landscapes. It’s only about 20 minutes from St. George, making it an easy drive while feeling like you’ve discovered a completely different world.
This beautiful family of six chose Cedar Pocket because they wanted the iconic desert landscape that Southern Utah is known for. More specifically, they dreamed of family photos surrounded by Joshua trees. This location delivered exactly that and so much more.

One of the things I love most about Cedar Pocket is how peaceful it feels. Unlike some of the more popular photography locations in Southern Utah, it offers plenty of open space and breathtaking views in every direction.
The paved walking path makes getting to the photo area incredibly easy, even for families with young children. Once you arrive, you’re surrounded by beautiful Joshua trees, desert plants, and endless mountain views that photograph beautifully throughout the year.
There is a small less than $5 day-use fee to enter the area, but it’s well worth it for the incredible scenery you’ll experience.
One helpful tip before you go. You will need the Recreation.gov app to pay the day use fee at the entrance. There is a QR code on the sign right by the parking area, but service can be pretty spotty out there, so I always recommend downloading the app and setting up your account before you leave home. It only takes a few minutes and saves you the stress of trying to get it to load when you arrive.
If you’re looking for a desert family photo location near St. George that feels natural, open, and a little less crowded, Cedar Pocket is definitely one to add to your list.

This family did such a wonderful job coordinating their outfits with the landscape.
The boys wore short-sleeve shirts that complemented the warm desert tones, while their daughter looked adorable in a floral dress that added the perfect touch of color against the neutral scenery.
One thing I especially loved was that they planned two outfit looks for their session.
For the second half of the evening, everyone added cozy sweaters, giving their gallery a completely different feel. Even though we photographed everything during the same session, those simple wardrobe changes created both a classic desert look and a warm, fall inspired style.
If you’re planning your own family session, bringing a second layer or sweater is an easy way to add variety to your final gallery without changing locations.

One of the sweetest parts of this session was meeting their family dog.
Pets are such an important part of many families, so I always love including them in a few portraits whenever possible. We started the session with everyone together, making sure their dog was part of those first family memories.
After we finished those images, they comfortably took him back to the car while we continued photographing the rest of the session. Since it was December and the temperatures were cool, he stayed perfectly comfortable while we finished exploring the area.
Including your dog at the beginning of your session is a great way to capture those memories without adding extra stress later on.

With four children, there was never a dull moment.
Whenever it wasn’t their turn in front of the camera, the boys happily entertained themselves by picking up rocks, exploring the desert, and seeing what interesting treasures they could find along the trail.
Instead of asking children to sit still the entire session, I always encourage little breaks where they can move, play, and simply enjoy being outside. Those moments help everyone relax and often lead to the biggest smiles once it’s their turn again.
Sessions like this remind me that family photography isn’t about creating perfect moments. It’s about documenting your family exactly as you are right now.
