As a Southern Utah family photographer I am always looking for locations that offer something a little different. If you’re looking for a beautiful place for family photos in Washington, Utah, Kirkland Fields offers something that can be surprisingly hard to find in Southern Utah. Lots of green grass and leafy trees. While the red rocks and desert landscapes make this area famous, sometimes you want a softer, greener backdrop for your family photos.
That’s exactly what made Kirkland Fields the perfect location for this family of four.
The family wanted their photos to feel natural and genuine. Mom had a clear vision for the session. She didn’t want stiff poses or awkward smiles. Instead, she wanted photographs that showed her family laughing, playing, and enjoying their time together. So, that’s exactly what we did.

Kirkland Fields stands out from many of the popular Southern Utah family photography locations because of its green landscape. The large grassy field and surrounding trees create a soft, natural setting that feels completely different from the area’s famous red rock scenery.
Because there aren’t many locations around St. George and Washington with this much green grass, Kirkland Fields has become a popular spot for family photographers and families alike.
The evening we photographed this session, we got lucky. Only one other family was at the field, so we had plenty of room to move around and let the kids explore. That made it much easier to create relaxed photographs without feeling rushed or crowded.
Kirkland Fields can get busy on weekends especially during peak fall season, so I recommend booking a weekday session if your schedule allows.
If you’re searching for Kirkland Fields family photos or a Washington, Utah family photographer, this location offers a beautiful option for families who want something a little softer and greener.

Mom had one important request for this session.
She wanted real smiles.
Their previous family photos had felt stiff, and she didn’t love the way those photographs captured her family. This time, she wanted something completely different.
I was all for it.
Instead of putting everyone into a series of traditional poses, we incorporated movement and games throughout the session. The kids got to run, interact with their parents, and have fun. Those activities created genuine expressions without forcing anyone to smile at the camera.
That’s one of my favorite parts of family photography. I don’t need your children to sit perfectly still and smile on command. I would much rather create an environment where they forget about the camera and simply enjoy being with their family.

We spent the evening playing games and encouraging plenty of movement.
Mom was still recovering from foot surgery, so we kept her comfort in mind throughout the session. We adjusted our activities so she could participate without pushing herself too far.
Even with that limitation, we captured so many authentic moments.
Family photography doesn’t have to involve running from one end of a field to the other. Sometimes the best photographs come from a simple interaction, a laugh, a cuddle, or a silly game.
The goal isn’t to make your family look like someone else’s family. The goal is to capture what makes your family yours.

Their daughter absolutely shined when it was her turn in front of the camera.
She came up with plenty of poses all on her own and confidently showed off her personality. She looked like a little princess as she moved through each pose and gave me her best expressions.
I love giving kids space to contribute ideas during a session. When children get to choose a pose or show off something they love, their confidence often comes through in the photographs.
Her personality made those individual portraits especially fun, and they added another layer to the family’s gallery.
