Family Photos at Sand Hollow State Park | Hurricane Utah Photographer | McKell Rose Photography

Family walking on sand beach at Sand Hollow State Park

As a Southern Utah family photographer, some of my favorite sessions happen right here at Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah. If you’re looking for one of the best locations for family photos in Hurricane, Utah, it’s hard to beat Sand Hollow State Park. Between the soft red sand, peaceful shoreline, tall trees, and incredible mountain views, this location offers so much variety in one session. Every season brings something different, but this beautiful fall evening was especially memorable.

This sweet family of five met me at the red sand beach area of Sand Hollow State Park for an evening filled with laughter, exploration, and meaningful moments together. An overcast sky gave us soft, even light for most of the session. Then, just before sunset, the sun peeked through the trees and created the most beautiful golden glow.

Why Sand Hollow State Park Is Perfect for Family Photos

One of my favorite things about photographing families at Sand Hollow State Park is how much variety we can capture without walking very far. The sandy beach creates a fun space for little ones to play, while the surrounding trees add texture and warmth. As the session continues, we can finish by the water with stunning mountain views in the background.

The relaxed setting also helps children feel comfortable. Instead of asking them to stand perfectly still, I encourage them to explore, run, and simply enjoy being together. Those natural interactions almost always become my favorite images from the evening.

If you’re searching for a Sand Hollow State Park family photographer or planning family photos in Hurricane, Utah, this location is one I recommend again and again.

Beautiful Fall Colors and Timeless Family Outfits

This family’s wardrobe was absolutely perfect for a fall session. Mom wore a gorgeous flowy red dress that photographed beautifully against the warm sand and soft neutral landscape. The rest of the family wore shades of green, tan, and cream, creating a timeless color palette that complemented the scenery without overpowering it.

Choosing outfits that coordinate instead of matching helps create a polished look while allowing each family member’s personality to shine. The combination of flowing fabrics and earthy colors looked incredible as the breeze moved through the session.

Capturing Genuine Moments Together

The youngest members of the family kept everyone smiling throughout the evening. Their toddler daughter loved running through the soft sand and exploring every little corner of the beach. Rather than stopping her curiosity, we embraced it. Some of the sweetest images came from simply letting her play while everyone else joined in.

Baby brother was all smiles for nearly the entire session. His happy personality made photographing him such a joy, and his big grin lit up every family portrait.

I always aim to create photographs that feel authentic. Instead of focusing on perfectly posed images, I guide families through playful prompts and simple activities that naturally create connection.

A Special Recreation of a Favorite Family Memory

One of my favorite moments happened before we made our way down to the water.

Dad had a special request to recreate one of their favorite family photos from a few years ago. In the original image, their daughters were running toward the camera while Mom and Dad stood softly blurred in the background. It was a photo they had always loved, and now that their family had grown, it felt like the perfect time to recreate it.

This time, Mom and Dad held their smiling baby boy while both girls ran through the open sand toward my camera. Behind them, Mom and Dad watched their daughters with so much love and admiration. It was such a sweet reminder of how much can change in just a few short years while the love within a family only continues to grow.

After recreating that meaningful image, we finished the session down by the shoreline. The calm water, glowing sunset, and mountain views created the perfect ending to an evening full of laughter, connection, and beautiful memories. Watching the family explore together along the water’s edge made for the sweetest final portraits and was the perfect way to wrap up their Sand Hollow State Park family session.
